Kids Saving the Rainforest runs the only legal rescue center which does rehabilitation of wounded,
sick and abandoned rainforest animals on the Pacific coast.
With full time highly skilled Wildlife Biologists, a Wildlife vet, and Wildlife Vet tech, Dani Dion.
Dr. Pia Martin is KSTR's Wildlife Regente, overseeing all of the wildlife at KSTR, and she has been with KSTR for ten years.
The team and Dr. Martin work with professional staff and volunteers, including many budding primatologists, to provide state of the art care for approximately 200 wild animals rescued each year. Without this center, most of these animals would die!

Our center is extremely effective at successfully releasing healthy animals back into the wild, with a 55% release rate which is high above the norm of 33%. In the past years we have worked with an enormous number of different animals including endangered squirrel monkeys, capuchins, two and three toed sloths, a jaguarundi, kinkajous, raccoons, and many more.
The species mostly attended to are the endemic titi (squirrel) monkey, two toed and three toed sloths and white face monkeys, but we rescue a myriad of other species as well. The main reason animals need our help is injuries such as being hit by cars, electrocution while climbing on high tension wires and abandonment: baby animals who have lost their parents and are found by themselves, so are now classified as orphans. Other animals come in sick with infectious diseases such as pneumonia and gastroenteritis.
We manage the center through a clinic. Animals are under constant care and supervision of an animal caretaker and a wildlife veterinarian. The Wildlife Rescue Center’s main objective is to rescue, rehabilitate and release injured, sick and orphaned animals back to the wild. Our center brings a high quality of care to a high quantity of individuals and species. Every year KSTR rescues over two hundred animals of over twenty five species. |
For each animal a medical file is started, a thorough physical exam is done, laboratory tests and a diagnosis is reached. Then the animal can be placed in ICU, in the treatment area, quarantine or be euthanized if no other mindful solution can be reached. Surgery, oxygen therapy, and minor procedures are done in the clinic. When the animal is ready to be released we coordinate with the environmental agency (MINAET) and place them where they were found if possible. Our goal is to supply the clinic with medical equipment and knowledge to become an epidemiological center vigilant of emerging diseases. This means we want to identify first hand if a risky disease arises that can affect people.
If you find injured wildlife, please call our WhatsApp line at:
506-8826-4625 or 506-88-ANIMAL or email ClinicDVM@kstr.org
(Due to no cell service in our area, please use the free mobile app "WhatsApp" to contact our WhatsApp line)
Please keep the animal contained in a quiet place until we can reach you.

PLEASE DONATE TO HELP KSTR PURCHASE A MUCH NEEDED X-RAY MACHINE Dr. Carmen Soto is a veterinarian at the wildlife rescue center of Kids Saving the Rainforest. Most of the animals that she receives come in with very serious injuries, trauma, and diseases and require X-rays. Unfortunately, KSTR does not have one on-site and has to travel for one hour to a location that has one. Sloths, monkeys, birds...They all need YOUR help! Right now we are raising funds to be able to purchase a DIGITAL X-RAY machine for our rescue center. Having an X-RAY machine on site is crucial for us to help save so many animals’ lives. Most of the animals we receive require X-rays, but unfortunately, we can only do them on the animals whose lives depend on them. This is because the closest X-ray machine to our vet clinic is one hour away. So every time an injured animal requires an X-ray, we need to find transportation to transfer the animal and drive with them for over 60km to get the X-ray taken, then do the whole trip again to bring them back. YOU CAN DELIVER LIFE AND HOPE TO ANIMALS When the animals first arrive at our rescue center, they are very stressed, scared and in pain and require immediate attention. Transporting them in a vehicle for one hour in their delicate condition creates more trauma and puts the animal in even more danger of dying. It’s extremely critical that we are able to act fast and get X-rays in order to help save these animals lives. Having to waste valuable time coordinating for transportation and transporting the animal one hour is something we don’t want to do. Sadly, many times the animal has died during the transportation to the X-ray machine - before we have even been able to do anything for them. With your help, we can raise funds to get an X-ray machine and be able to diagnose the animals in time and act on it immediately. Giving the animals a better chance and making them more comfortable while they are already battling for their lives. SPECIFICALLY, ALL FUNDS RAISED WILL GO TOWARDS: 1. Digital X-ray Machine. This includes the X-RAY Digitizer, X-RAY Generator and the stand for it. 2. Veterinarian software, computer, and monitor to evaluate the images. 3. Table for the patient. 4. Protective apparel for radiation: 2 lead aprons and 2 lead collars for the staff to safely use the machine. 5. Building a small diagnostic room for the machine. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for any amount of support you can give the animals. Not to mention how grateful the animals will be that you are making their fight to survive a lot easier! Join us in this great cause and being part of our team to help the animals in Costa Rica! |
