Kids Saving the Rainforest places wildlife bridges that cross above the roads of Manuel Antonio.
With the help of the Costa Rican Institute of Electricity (ICE)​ and local experts, we continue to erect bridges and carefully maintain them over the years.  
Keeping the wildlife bridges safe and functional is an enormous job, due to tropical storms and numerous other factors. 

The leading causes of death of the endangered Squirrel monkeys in Manuel Antonio are:
- Electrocution by high-voltage wires while crossing roads  
- Getting run over by cars

The bridge program was initiated with these endangered monkeys in mind (affectionately nicknamed 'Titi' monkeys), as they are endemic to our Central Pacific area of Costa Rica - almost exclusively around Manuel Antonio....but now we also see that many species make use of these safer, helpful passageways.

For these endangered monkeys in particular, these bridges have been a critical life-saving feature of our program and have been instrumental in helping the endemic population grow of Central American Grey-capped Squirrel monkeys (one of the two red backed squirrel monkey subspecies in Costa Rica- Saimiri Oerstedii).  This helped lead to a surge from 1200 Squirrel individuals in our local population was last estimated to be more over 3000, according to recent studies by local wildlife biologist Lenin Rosales.
Other conservation efforts like reforestation, and teaching people not to feed the monkeys, (as it causes them more harm), also greatly benefit the species. 

​Their IUCN Red List status went from "critically endangered" to "endangered" in 2008...so there is promising improvement - but those numbers are still low, more current studies need to be done, and we have more to do and more bridges to build!

Our monkey bridges have now been renamed to "wildlife bridges" because the camera trap pictures below located at the bridges found 22 species crossing the bridges!  Big thanks to Katra Laidlaw for her studies.
