More great releases! 1 Squirrel & 3 Woodpeckers!
BB was brought in as a very young orphaned Squirrel with his eyes still closed...and a broken leg. He healed very quickly and could not be held back, so he got to be soft-released within a couple months. It took a little while to gain his confidence and full independence, but now we don't see him for a few days at a time...and don't need to put any supplemental food out for him!
Buzz, Woody & Rex were young fledgling Yellow-naped Woodpeckers (that came in with a nestling pygmy owl) that had all fallen out of nests when a tree fell down. Their mom & nest were nowhere to be found.
The grew up super fast and learned to eat and fly well enough on their own that they were soft-released within a couple weeks!
The boys, Woody & Rex took off right away,
while Buzz, the female, hung around for about a week and looked for a bit of extra food...but joined her brothers to fly and sleep at night. Now we see & hear them off in the distance, but they are fully independent!
Many thanks to @Valerie Bimbi, Helen Ellis, Elaine Simmons Ellis Van den Eynden for helping with the zillion feedings to get these birds ready!
